Lesson 1 of 3

Application: How Should I Respond?

The Purpose of Bible Study

The goal of Bible study is not merely to gain knowledge — it is to be transformed. Application is where the rubber meets the road. After you have observed what the text says and interpreted what it means, you must ask: How should I respond?

James warns sternly against being a hearer of the Word only. To study without applying is to deceive yourself.

But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

James 1:22-25

Questions for Application

For every passage you study, ask yourself these practical questions:

  • Is there a command to obey?
  • Is there a promise to claim?
  • Is there a sin to confess or avoid?
  • Is there an example to follow or avoid?
  • Is there a truth about God to believe and worship?
  • Is there a prayer to echo?

Application must be specific and personal. It is not enough to say "I should love people more." A real application names the person, the action, and the timeframe: "I will call my neighbor this week to see how she is doing after her surgery."

This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

Joshua 1:8

The Blessed Life

The Bible consistently promises blessing to those who not only hear God's Word but do it. The first Psalm paints a picture of the person who meditates on Scripture day and night — they are like a tree planted by rivers of water, bearing fruit in season, prospering in all they do.

This is the ultimate goal of the inductive method: not academic knowledge, but a life rooted in the Word of God and bearing fruit for His glory.

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
